Absinthes were produced by macerating herbs in a neutral spirit, usually wine. The ending result of this process was a green-colored liquid that was primarily made up of anise. Absinthes were very popular but there were no quality controls or regulations and this invited cheap versions of the drink that were often laced with toxic substances to make inferior brands more convincing. Therefore Absinthe was eventually deemed harmful and was banned in 1915 throughout much of Europe and the world.
